Maintenance Mechanic

Position Summary:

Troubleshoot, repair and maintain the facility’s production and equipment mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical systems. Safely carries out work while following electrical code, equipment manuals, schematic diagrams, blueprints and other specifications as required. Uses hand tools, power tools, and electrical and electronic test equipment to complete daily tasks. Support continuous improvement activities to aid in increasing the facility’s SIS efficiency.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist Production to ensure the application of safe work and food safety practices are met.
    A. Inspect work area for worker safety and food safety issues. Correct deficiencies immediately when possible.  Communicate corrections and follow up work needed to the Maintenance Manager. 
    B. Maintain timely completion of PM’s, assigned Work Orders, and continuous improvement tasks.
  • Ensure that the Boiler is supplied with the proper amounts of chemicals and that all operational procedures are followed.
    A. Inspect boiler system for any abnormalities.
    B. Follow guidelines for blow downs and chemical analysis.
    C. Keep accurate log of all activities relating to the boiler.
  • Operate and maintain the refrigeration system to ensure safety and maximum capability.
    A. Drain oil as required.
    B. Inspect and maintain all components of the ammonia system to IIAR standards.
  • Troubleshoot, Repair, Rebuilt, or Replace all plant equipment when needed.
    A. Understand the operation of all equipment in the plant and maintain it to operate the highest efficiency possible. 
    B. Understand principles of pump operation and maintain them to maximize efficient outputs and longevity.
    C. Understand control wiring including PLC logic to be able to keep the equipment running in an efficient safe manner.
    D. Understand steam principles and design to be able to maintain solenoid valves and processing uses of steam.
    E. Understand pneumatic principles and design to be able to maintain solenoid valves and processing uses of air.
    F. Understand mechanical concepts in motion devices, such as bearings, shafts, pulleys, and others.  
  • Fabrication of parts, platforms, piping, equipment and other items needed to efficiently and safely run the plant.
    A. Proficient use of all types of welding to safely meet the needs of the project.
    B. Use of machine shop tools including drill press, mill, lathe and other tools as needed to fabricate and repair items needed in the operation of the plant.
  • Responsible for following all food safety policies, procedures and regulatory criteria including the current SQF code, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and associated preventive controls
  • Other duties as assigned
Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 5-10 years of journey level experience in electrical and mechanical maintenance of industrial equipment 
  • LME highly preferred
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Working knowledge of mechanical and electrical concepts and operating safety
  • Demonstrated ability to use hand and power tools commonly used in electrical and mechanical trades
  • Basic knowledge of PLC operation


Physical Demands:

Regularly requires intermittent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, squatting, kneeling, pushing, and pulling.  Physical strength and dexterity sufficient to perform the required task(s). Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more with assistance.  Additional demands may be required.


Work Environment:

In addition to normal business hours, work schedules may include after hours and weekends as needed.  May work outside and in adverse temperatures which include extreme hot, cold, and humidity.  May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration.  Must be willing and able to wear personal protective equipment as required by established Company Safety standards.  May require work in confined and dark spaces, and at heights in excess of 18 feet for prolonged periods of time.
