Engineering Manager

Position Summary:

Provide Engineering project management support and direction to manufacturing facilities in regard to capital projects, optimizing current operations, reducing cost, introducing new products and meeting government and customer requirements. Implement construction projects as needed throughout the Company.  Projects will range from the redesign of existing manufacturing lines or the layout and installation of new manufacturing lines to World Class Manufacturing improvement initiatives and Facility Expansions.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for successfull management of capital projects at multiple facilities, including equipment and facility upgrades, capacity expansions and distribution expansions.  Obtain and evaluate proposals for capital equipment purchases and mechanical, electrical and civil design and work.  Provide hands on leadership of the design, procurement, installation, start up and hand off to Manufacturing phases of capital projects.
  • Coordinate and direct facility construction and equipment installation services with suppliers, contractors, OEMs and production and maintenance personnel.  Maintain projects on budget, on scope and on time.
  • Coordination and direction of cross functional teams (manufacturing, supply chain, packaging engineering, R&D) to ensure projects meet the needs of all stakeholders, while maintaining focus on Safety, Quality, Customer Service and Costs.
  • Support Regional Engineering Managers through project development, design, preliminary engineering and project management.  Utilize CAD and MS Project tools to coordinate design and project execution among all project stakeholders with a clear view to status of project and scope development.  
  • Assist in the development, implementation and progression of the Early Equiment Management Pillar, CQV process and Engineering standards.
  • Preparation of bid documents for the purpose to obtain project scope, specifications, justification, detailed cost estimate and project savings calculations.
  • Keep informed of new technologies in packaging and processing automation to maintain a competetive advantage in the marketplace and our position as a low cost quality producer.  

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of  Science Degree in Engineering with 2 - 5 years experience in a food manufacturing operation including experience in project management, CAD, line layout, mechanical/civil and electrical engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Previous experience in the oils, spreads and dressing industry a plus.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Firm knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices and Government regulations as they apply to a food manufacturing operation (OSHA, EPA, FDA, USDA, GMP).  
  • Must be skilled in problem solving and process  deveopment. 
  • Must have strong management skills in regard to coordinating the efforts of plant personnel and outside contractors.  
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Word, Excel and MS Project required.  Knowledge of JD Edwards a plus.
  • Ability to manage projects involving multiple contractors from conception to start-up.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of packaging and processing automation.
  • Ability to handle multiple duties and projects simultaneously.
  • Strong team and personal leadership skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization using written and verbal presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, refrigeration, hydraulic, and boiler systems.

Physical Demands:
Regularly requires intermittent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, squatting, kneeling, pushing, and pulling.  Physical strength and dexterity sufficient to perform the required task(s).  Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more with assistance.  Additional demands may be required.

 

Work Environment:
In addition to normal business hours, work schedules may include after hours and weekends as needed.  May work outside and in adverse temperatures which include extreme hot, cold, and humidity.  May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration.  Must be willing and able to wear personal protective equipment as required by established Company Safety standards.  May require work in confined and dark spaces, and at heights in excess of 18 feet for prolonged periods of time.
