Senior Director Cost Accounting

Position Summary:

The Senior Director of Cost Accounting is a key financial leader responsible for driving cost accuracy, compliance, and strategic insights across the organization. This role ensures adherence to companywide cost accounting policies and procedures while partnering with FP&A, Operations Finance, and other cross-functional departments to optimize costing methodologies and support informed decision-making.  Key responsibilities include: compliance and governance with cost accounting policies and commodities accounting, standard cost development and maintenance, variance analysis and insight, systems and process transformation and cross-functional leadership/collaboration on cost optimization and profitability initiatives.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Guide and support the Commodities Accounting Manager in ensuring accurate and timely execution of commodity oil-related accounting activities across daily, weekly, monthly, and annual cycles.
  • Provide strategic direction and mentorship to the Cost Accounting Managers, ensuring accurate execution of monthly, quarterly, and annual cost activities and reporting. Oversee budget variance analysis for labor efficiency, material usage and yields, overhead spending, and capacity utilization, while driving actionable insights to support operational and financial objectives.
  • Provide team with alternate methodologies, such as incremental costing, when adding new manufacturing line(s) to a plant or when there is a significant change in volume during the fiscal year.
  • Lead the training and development of the Cost Accounting team, ensuring proficiency in current systems, best-practice methodologies and evolving technologies.
  • Oversee and coordinate audit support activities relating to standard cost and commodity valuation, ensuring the accounting team receives accurate data and documentation to maintain compliance and operational excellence.
  • Provide support to other projects assigned by VP, Finance and Accounting and EVP, CFO, as needed.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree with primary focus in Accounting or Finance or equivalent experience, is required.
  • 10+ years progressive financial experience, with an enterprise focus in cost accounting within a large company, is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor & manage a high performing team, is required.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, highly analytical, and possess the ability to interact and present to executive management, is required
  • Travel: 10%
  • MBA and or  CPA preferred.
  • Commodity accounting experience is highly preferred.
  • Background in manufacturing preferably within the food or processing industry.
  • Experience leading and managing a remote team is highly preferred.
  • Prior demonstrated change management and system implementation experience desired.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong communication skills, highly analytical and the ability to interact across various teams and levels.
  • The ability to develop strong working relationships in across Operations, Sales, Revenue Management and other cross-functional teams.

Typical shifts are 8-12 hours per day.   Additional unscheduled time after hours and on weekends may also be required.  Employees must be willing and able to wear personal protective equipment as required by Company policy and/or legal requirements.  In addition, certain jobs may require employees to:

  • Work outside and/or in adverse temperatures which could include extreme heat, cold, and humidity;
  • Be exposed to vibrations, chemicals used in operations, fumes and food allergens (may include soy, dairy and other allergens); and
  • Be required to work in confined and dark spaces, and at heights in excess of 18 feet.
