Mgr Transportation Operations

Position Summary:

Manage the daily execution of transportation services through a team of transportation planners, the Transportation Management System (TMS), the Tracking, Tracing and Reporting system (FourKites), and through assigned administrative processes to produce reliable, cost effective, and consistent transportation service to internal and external customers.  Support the carrier relationship and selection process through knowledge and experience of daily carrier performance. Establish, maintain, and encourage a culture of service and responsiveness.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage, mentor, train and maintain a highly responsive and service oriented staff of transportation planners and administrative personnel.  Cross-train personnel by function and region to meet execution goals. Set group and individual KPIs to be used in one-on-one performance meetings and for departmental reporting. Evaluated personnel performance through the annual PPE process. 
  • Use the Tracking & Tracing system to review and pre-plan daily freight movements inbound and outbound to/from/between plants, customers, suppliers, co-packers; ensuring movements are accomplished according to the scheduled plan and in tandem with the business needs of the organization. Share knowledge and functionality of the Tracking and Tracing system to enhance inter-departmental communication and service.
  • Support the evaluation of carriers by assessing service performance. Provide feedback to support carrier ranking. Participate in the carrier meetings and provide feedback on service quality and options.   
  • Perform training activities as needed with groups outside of Transportation - Customer Solutions, Purchasing, Supply Chain Planning, and plant level personnel - Sales Coordinators and Distribution Managers. 
  • Transportation process improvement - Identify opportunities within our operating systems (TMS, Tracking & Tracing) and collaborate with our in-house "super user" to support system improvement and ensure program functionality is current and forward looking.
  • Maintain and reduce transportation complaints to a level that meets and/or exceeds corporate goals.  
  • Cost control duties - Manage and monitor planner labor hours and expense. Measure and improve planner decisions in carrier selection and work with Customer Solutions to develop options to decrease cost while meeting service goals. Other responsibilities as directed.
  • Manage the freight audit and payment process to ensure Ventura accurately pays carriers in a timely manner. 
  • Manage the freight claim process - from investigation, reporting, through to GL application.

Education and Experience:

  • College degree in a logistics related field or 5 years relevant experience.  
  • Transportation Management System (TMS) experience in executing daily transportation plans is a plus.  
  • Candidate needs to have prior staff management experience.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Position requires strong commitment to performance in a demanding service environment.  
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively manage a diverse staff in a fast paced environment are a must.
  • Requires the ability to simultaneously manage multiple issues and constituents under pressure to deliver results.
  • The position requires knowledge and experience in computer based office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), as well as typical main frame order management programs.
  • Experience in mentoring and developing a high performance, service oriented team is a key requirement.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to manage a budget and schedule employees to tasks.
