Human Resources Generalist

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Senior HR Manager, the HR Generalist is an internal resource on employment matters, ensuring adherence to legislation, company policies and other matters related to staffing and performance. The HRG will manage day-to-day HR operations including full-cycle recruiting , employee relations, investigations under guidance, total rewards programs, performance and talent management, employee practices and procedures, coordinating site training and development programs, maintaining HR records, supporting change management and employee communications. Will coordinate engagement initiatives and support employee recognition efforts. Will administer and ensure compliance with FMLA, ADA and company leave policies. Serves as an internal consultant to ,supervisors and employees on issues that affect performance and business relationships while fostering a workplace environment consistent with the values and mission outlined by leadership of Ventura Foods. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supports Department Managers and Supervisors in the execution of the HR people strategy to drive improve site efficiency and performance, with the goal of high engagement and low turnover.
  • Supports off shift employees and supervision by attending Start-Up Meetings, AOR's, and Round Table meetings. Provides HR support to the Philadelphia satellite distribution employees.
  • Responsible for managing overall performance, management and people planning, and employee engagement efforts.
  • Manage full-cycle recruitment and onboarding for all exempt and nonexempt personnel, especially for high-volume hourly positions common in manufacturing. 
  • Responsible for compliance with Federal and State legislation pertaining to all personnel and payroll matters and communicating those changes to appropriate staff. Ensure adherence to labor laws and company policies, including those related to safety, anti-harassment, and accident/incident reporting.
  • Develops and administers various human resources plans and procedures for facility; monitoring to ensure proper implementation and interpretation.
  • Maintain accurate employee records, manage HRIS data, and process related documentation. Oversees personnel record keeping related to new hire, employee review, promotions, transfers, employee benefits, separations and exit interviews.
  • Regularly walks the manufacturing floor to build relationships, understand workplace dynamics, and serve as a visible and approachable HR point of contact, with the goal of Addressing  employee concerns, mediate conflicts, and conduct investigations while maintaining a positive work environment. 
  • Manager special projects and perform other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in HR, Business, or related field required.
  • 2 - 4 years' of HR generalist experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment required.
  • Professional Human Resources (PHR) certification preferred.
  • Experience in both union and non-union work environments definite asset.
  • Experience in labor relations and bilingual Spanish a bonus.   

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to objectively coach employees and management through complex, difficult, and emotional issues.
  • Strong ability to manage high-volume employee relations issues, including disciplinary actions, with professionalism.
  • Excellent communication, critical thinking, and the ability to build strong relationships with both employees and management.
  • Crucial for handling sensitive employee matters and investigations.
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant employment laws and regulations. 
  • Experience with Human Resources Information Systems is a plus.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills.  
  • Ability to observe confidentiality.  
  • Ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve problems or issues by using judgment that is in consistent with standards, practices, policies, procedures and regulation or government law.  
  • Working knowledge of employment law and other government compliance regulations.        
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills required.

Typical shifts are 8-12 hours per day.   Additional unscheduled time after hours and on weekends may also be required.  Employees must be willing and able to wear personal protective equipment as required by Company policy and/or legal requirements.  In addition, certain jobs may require employees to:

  • Work outside and/or in adverse temperatures which could include extreme heat, cold, and humidity;
  • Be exposed to vibrations, chemicals used in operations, fumes and food allergens (may include soy, dairy and other allergens); and
  • Be required to work in confined and dark spaces, and at heights in excess of 18 feet.
