Position Summary:

Director of Regulatory is responsible for developing and leading the implementation for all aspects of Technical Compliance and Regulatory initiatives. Making sure to meet all the regulatory guidelines in the selling markets that Ventura Foods has a business interest. Selling markets are comprised of North and South America, APAC, LATAM, EU, and Middle East. Work should include the development and management of regulatory compliance related to ingredients, formulations, religious compliance, label, package, and coding compliance for the specific country of origin. As the Regulatory Subject Matter Expert, will assist with local government agencies, industry associations, freight forwarding companies, and any other organization for the purpose of working through legislation, regulations, and any other guidelines that impact business transactions. This role will also liaison with Sales, Marketing, R&D, Legal, and Operations as needed to support our business initiatives, up to and including Ventura Foods manufacturing partners. Will also manage outside contracting services supporting import/export documentation specific to a selling region.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Retains and proactively seeks to enhance understanding of Federal, State and International labeling regulations for compliant review and approval of Company labels.  Provides guidance and leadership by facilitating the understanding and interpretation of these regulations to R&D, sales, customer and to stakeholders internal or external of the Department to drive alignment.  Maintains open communication and relationships with external and internal resources to remain abreast of current and upcoming regulatory environment.
  • Leverages knowledge of current regulations, product formulation, supplier specifications, customer requirements and Company standards to help facilitate collaboration on key projects and requests.
  • Independently coordinates and manages projects and tasks and expectations as necessary.  Utilizes significant knowledge of regulatory requirements, policies/procedures and processes to provide guidance and balance to outside contractors and consultants.  Collaborates inter-departmentally and coordinates or directs the stream-lined flow of information to drive efficiency in the fulfillment and sharing of regulatory documentation and information.
  • Continuously evaluates Company centralized on-line specification system for updates, enhancement and standardization in order to submit application for products submitted to be sold in geographical regions of the world.   Develop and maintain the most up-to-date Genesis labeling and nutrition documentation package.   
  • Ensures the accuracy and completeness of the Company technical regulatory document library.
  • Prepare and administer the project work schedule, including personnel requirements. Assign staff to specific projects, develop project schedules, and oversee activities of the staff and consultants to ensure high quality results and timely completion of all projects within applicable guidelines.
  • Understands complexities of international trade agreements such as NAFTA & CAFTA, APAC, ASAN.  Utilizes this understanding to properly assess Company finished products under correct harmonized tariff codes and to provide the Company with appropriate documentation to meet specific export requirements.  
  • Ensures the accuracy and completeness of Company technical documentation for customer databases via web portals.
  • May represent VP R&D or others Sr Managers at company meetings or events.  May represent company at industry events
  • Hire regulatory staff as required, ensure training and development activities are provided to optimize staff skills, conduct performance appraisals, and develop individual objectives for staff. Ensure a safe workplace environment.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in food science/nutrition, food technology, international law or equivalent
  • 10-15 years’ in the food/beverage/pharma/food chemical manufacturing industry with 7-10 years’ work experience in regulatory/compliance fields
  • Prior direct supervisory or managerial experience
  • Trade experience - NAFTA, etc. is nice to have
  • Food Service and/or Retail commercial channel experience highly preferred
  • USDA label submission would be great
  • International regulatory law experience a plus

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Good communication, writing, computer and statistical skills, technically oriented.
  • Import and export knowledge of product specifications, nutrition and labeling for finished products and ingredients and other documents based on FDA 21 CFR Guidelines, USDA, Health Canada, and other government and/or country guidelines, including APAC, ASEAN, EU, Latin and South America.  
  • Ability to organize and prioritize projects and requests.
