Commodities Accounting Manager

Position Summary:

To manage the financial reporting activities relating to commodity transactions for the Company. This includes Oil Transfer Variance calculation(s), Daily Oil Position Report and periodic Mark to Market of all future oil supply commitments. Also calculates the risk exposure relating to contract balances at period end and provides estimates of Mark to Market financial position as requested. Maintains the Oil Cost Tables in our systems and resposible for adding all commodity components into plant component files. Provides analytical support to Commodity Operations and HQ Finance teams relating to oil activities as requested.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Review, adjust and consolidate the month end open position reports and calculate the Mark to Market.  Prepare and post month end entries. Review monthly results with Finance and Oil Trading teams. Determine balances relating to Risk Managed Customers. Prepare month end management reports 
  • Review daily OTV data and generate Management report
  • Weekly forecast for all company oil positions to account for expected commodity impact to financial statements, including Mark to Market. Also calculated estimated MTM impact based on a projected CBOT market
  • Determine when commodity components need to be added to system and develop oil table requirements to update system.  Also provide Cost Accounting with oil cost for new oils not in our system
  • Perform analysis of other oil activities as required by Finance or Commodity Operations including researching differential between system position balance and Commodity Operations projected balance
  • Support year-end audit activities. Explain and manage reporting of fluctuations in balance sheet and oil income accounts from year to year for our outside auditors and quarter to quarter for internal management
  • Develop new reports for value added analysis and continue to automate and streamline function
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree with 8-10+ years of accounting experience
  • Must include 4-5 years of commodities or financial instrument accounting experience, with activities traded on major exchanges
  • Food based commodity experience preferred, with vegetable oil highly desired
  • Experience with JDE or AS400 highly preferred
Knowledge and Skills:
  • High degree of accuracy with numerical transactions.
  • Strong attention to detail, superior organization skills, strong oral and written communication skills required.
  • Requires the ability to act independently with a wide variety of internal and external personnel. 
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities and tasks, and to meet critical deadlines is essential.
